Merger FAQs

Northcentral University was established in 1996 as a graduate-oriented online university offering a diverse array of doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate programs in a one-to-one learning model with mentor support to provide personalized and professionally relevant education. NCU became part of National University in 2019 and is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission. In 2022, Northcentral University merged with National University, which is also accredited by WSCUC.

Northcentral University and National University are both part of the National University. We are combining these two institutions because they have complementary strengths and aligned missions. As a result, we will create a strong, single institution that will provide students with a full range of market-relevant programs and more innovative, learning opportunities to prepare them for tomorrow’s jobs today. By combining NCU and NU into one institution, we will have the resources to further advance our position as one of the leading universities for adult learners and enhance our ability to serve students and expand access to an affordable education for decades to come.

National University’s historic commitment to advancing educational opportunities for students of diverse backgrounds, including adult learners, is mission-aligned with NCU. NU serves students nationwide in both on-ground and online formats and is currently transforming the way they serve students to provide an even better experience for all students. For this NU and NCU are bringing their strengths together for the benefits of their students.

The merger is expected to enhance and strengthen academic pathways that align with National University’s direction as a nonprofit network dedicated to reinvesting in students and providing affordable higher education. It will provide opportunities to grow and diversify degree offerings in addition to delivering superior student services and outcomes.   

Currently, there are no changes to tuition expected due to the merger.

Students will not experience disruption to their financial aid, and we anticipate no disruptions to the stipend process. 

Yes, the faculty will not change due to the merger.

Please continue to work with your Admissions Advisor to complete your application process and enroll in your program. Your advisor will also be able to answer general questions about the merger. You’ll receive more information about the official merger date once it has been determined.

Yes, NU is regionally accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), which is part of the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). This is also NCU’s accreditor. WASC accreditation assures that the school’s purposes are appropriate and being accomplished through a viable educational program, and that it is a trustworthy institution for student learning.

Yes, the Commission sent notification on June 30, 2022, that it approved the merger between National University and Northcentral University.

No. After Northcentral University merges with National University, it will adopt the National University name. Once current Northcentral students finish their programs, they can choose whether to have the Northcentral University or National University name printed on their diploma.

NCU students will become NU students, but will be able to complete their degrees in the same format and modality as they are currently in. At the conclusion of their degrees, current NCU students will have the option to graduate from NCU or NU, but all students will be NU students.

Yes, if you enroll after the official merger date. If you’re currently applying to Northcentral University or are a prospective student, you’re encouraged to complete your application. Students enrolled prior to the official merger date will have the opportunity to complete their NCU program.
