Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego – Douglas Barr, associate regional dean for military students at National University, has been named a recipient of the William Kennedy Award by the Council of Colleges and Military Educators for outstanding service in military education.

Doug Barr, a former Marine Corps Sergeant Major, oversees a staff of 15 and serves approximately 600 military students per month with on-base and online courses from his office here. He also oversees learning centers at MCAS Miramar, NAS North Island, 32nd Street Naval Station, NAB Coronado and the Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center in Point Loma.

A 30-year veteran of the Marine Corps, serving in campaigns from Vietnam to the Gulf War, Doug Barr earned his bachelor’s degree while on active duty, and holds an MBA from National University. He has served in military education with National University since 1995, during which time the University has distinguished itself through innovative and award-winning contributions to military education and educational service to the U.S. military community. Last year the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education Commission on Military Education and Training presented National University with the Ray Ehrensberger Award for Institutional Excellence in Military Education.

The Council of Colleges and Military Educators has presented the William Kennedy Award to leaders in military education since 1986. It is given to nominees who are employees of institutions offering instructional programs at one or more military installations. The programs of instruction offered by recipient’s employing institution must be governed by the provisions of voluntary off-duty educations programs.

Nominees must be recommended by at least two active members of CCME. In addition, the Awards Committee may seek a written recommendation from the President, Vice-President, or Dean from the nominee’s educational institution.

Nominees for the William Kennedy Award must be active members of CCME, having attended two of the last four conferences, and they must have been employed directly in the promotion and delivery of voluntary off-duty education programs for a period of at least three years.
